In an otherwise admirable job of hacking away at James Ellroy's novel -- and it's amazing how he's retained the tone and themes of the book even as he dismembers the plot -- the screenwriter needed some way for Exley to "solve" the mystery. In the book, it's an internal realization; in the movie, it's handed to him by Jack via Dudley Smith.</description>
